Importance of Sleep and Why People Take It for Granted

Importance Of Sleep

Importance Of Sleep

Having barely slept the previous night, a student in zombie-like state dashes to his classroom, hardly noticing anyone and slumps into his chair, obviously not fit to listen to the day’s lesson. This commonly happens to many young people these days – they sleep very little. They sleep late, wake up early every day – like there is no tomorrow to reckon with. Now you may wonder what keeps them awake all the time. Well, in this age of computers – young people devote a lot of their time online or just playing computer games, which makes them oblivious of the hours that pass by. Apparently, they are not aware about the importance of sleep.

The importance of sleep is often taken for granted because the effects of lack of sleep does not manifest instantly over time. The results are long shot and the most probable period when one experiences its toll is when he reaches middle age. Talk about the adage ‘what you sow is what you reap’ – and not sleeping on time and not having enough hours of sleep point to it. Hence younger people disregard the importance of sleep because they do not feel the consequences at the moment and as everyone knows – young people often think they are invincible.

Yet people who do not acknowledge how important is sleep to us, will certainly change their opinion if they learn all about the benefits of sleep. First of all, sleep aids in the preservation of brain cells that are responsible in memory retention. If you have, at times, gone through some sleeplessness nights, you will know why after those bad nights, you have difficulty remembering things. Secondly, sleep helps promote metabolism in the body. With less sleep, the body accumulates fat more quickly that gets deposited in all areas of the body. Thirdly, sleep contributes to one’s general well being and causes one to be more patient, attentive, retentive and alert both physically and mentally. So, now you understand the importance of sleep.
