Sleep is said to be a certified panacea. In this maddening world today, people rush here and there and tend to abuse their bodies with overwork, fatigue and stress. Although modern medicine offers potent cure even to the most serious disease, the importance of sleep cannot be taken for granted. No argument can ever buff a claim that sleep is not vital in a person’s health. In many cases, it is in fact, the best therapy.

 

How Much Sleep Do I Need?

The recommended length of sleep is six to eight hours, depending on the biological clock of an individual. There are people who can get by with just six hours of sleep while there are those who need more. Eight hours is the ideal sleep time and most recommended as beyond this may cause sluggishness in the morning. The key here is – to get just the right amount of sleep. Having fewer hours is discouraged but having more than what is needed is neither recommended. The importance of sleep is therefore relative, based on the personal need of a person. When one is ill, he naturally requires more sleep hours because his body needs time to recuperate. On the other hand an active and well person must have enough rest though not too much as it might cause him to vegetate or stagnate.

Everybody must realize the importance of sleep because it offers the best form of relaxation and detoxification – processes needed by the body to stay healthy and strong. The reason why a wounded soldier or a person with fractured bones is advised to get as much sleep as he can – is because wounds and injuries heal faster with sleep. In fact there are instances where even the best antibiotics cannot heal a serious wound but with enough sleep, rest and proper nursing, the deep cut closes in due time.

With the many benefits of sleep that a person with deep, quality sleep gets, medical practitioners always impart on patients the importance of sleep for fitness and health. No amount of dieting and exercise will result to a fit body unless a person gets the right amount of sleep.
